Weather-Delayed Match Concludes with Northridge Victory

NorthWood Boys Tennis had to wait an extra day — and change venues — to complete its Northern Lakes Conference matchup with Northridge. The match originally began Tuesday at NorthWood, but weather and lightning brought the evening to an early end. Only one varsity court was able to finish before play was suspended. The Panthers and Raiders returned to action Wednesday evening, moving indoors to Eastlake Athletic Club in Elkhart to complete the remaining four varsity matches. Northridge ultimately earned the 5-0 varsity victory, dropping NorthWood to 4-9 overall and 2-3 in NLC play. The Panthers battled through several competitive sets despite the final team score. At No. 3 singles, junior Jack Johnson pushed Lucas Ellis throughout the match before falling 6-4, 7-5. Senior Eli Heckathorn and senior Ethan Tompos also challenged Northridge's Ty Stahly and Miles Hainlin at No. 1 doubles. After dropping the opening set, the NorthWood duo battled into a second-set tiebreak before falling 6-1, 7-6 (2). Sophomore Carter Rose fell to Grahm Tabor 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, while senior Nolan Tompos was defeated by Seth Lomas 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 doubles, senior Sebastian Chapman and junior Colton Ewers fell to Finn Schmidt and Grant Kauffman 6-3, 6-1. Junior Varsity The JV Panthers were able to complete three courts Tuesday before lightning halted play, with four additional matches already underway. Because Wednesday's continuation was moved indoors, the remaining JV matches were not completed. NorthWood earned a 2-1 victory in the three completed JV matches, improving to 8-2-1 overall and 3-1 in the NLC. Junior Brody Freeland picked up a 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles, while junior Brinqley Parvu-Timmer and sophomore Robbie Yoder earned a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. Junior Jackson Kemp dropped a close 6-4 decision at No. 2 singles. The Panthers will have a quick turnaround as they return home Thursday to host Warsaw.
