The NorthWood boys tennis team wrapped up the regular season Monday evening with a hard-fought 3-2 loss at Wawasee. From the opening serve, every court was engaged in a battle. Wawasee took the first two completed singles matches as Nolan Tompos fell 4-6, 1-6 at No. 1 Singles and Jack Johnson dropped his No. 3 Singles match 4-6, 0-6. NorthWood answered at No. 1 Doubles, where Eli Heckathorn and Ethan Tompos battled their way to a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory. With the match hanging in the balance, both No. 2 Singles and No. 2 Doubles went deep into third sets. Sebastian Chapman and Colton Ewers delivered a crucial point for the Panthers at No. 2 Doubles, earning a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory to even the team score at 2-2. That left the match on the racquet of NorthWood’s Carter Rose at No. 2 Singles. Rose battled back throughout the match after splitting the first two sets, 7-5 and 1-6. In the deciding set, Wawasee built a 5-1 lead, but Rose refused to go away, winning four straight games to tie the set at 5-5. Wawasee answered by winning the next two points to take the deciding set 7-5 and secure the 3-2 team victory. NorthWood finishes the regular season with a 4-11 overall record and a 2-5 mark in NLC play. The Panthers’ JV squad closes its season with an impressive 10-2-1 overall record and 5-1 NLC record. Next Up The varsity Panthers now turn their attention to the NLC Tournament, with first-round action coming Wednesday at NorthWood High School.
